Verizon today announced that, starting next week, it will offer international roaming to customers traveling to Cuba, making it the first major US carrier to do so. Customers who opt into the Pay-As-You-Go International Travel option for their plans will be able to take advantage of the new package — so long as they have a device that works overseas. The price for connectivity is fairly high, though, coming in at $2.99 per minute for talk and $2.05 per megabyte of data.
Ever since the United States and Cuba moved to normalize diplomatic relations earlier this year, American businesses have moved quickly to expand their operations on the Caribbean island nation. Companies like MasterCard, Netflix, and Airbnb all set up shop in the country in the months that followed. With Verizon now offering roaming to its customers, restrictions that ban tourism make even less sense.
